Shutong Hill

Shutong Hill is located southeast of the joining of Tianjia River and Li River, It is the smallest peak along the bank of the Li River. It is nearly 2 kilometers (about 1.24 miles) away from Yangshuo County. A rock of 10 meters (about 32.8 feet) high stretches out in a slot on the north hillside. The hill takes the shape of a column and looks like an elegant girl when viewed from afar. Looking more closely, it resembles a schoolboy absorbed in reading, hence the name Shutong Hill (Schoolboy Hill).

There is a legend about the hill. It is said that long ago, there was an evil dragon in the Li River. It often hovered on the Li River and endangered the local people. One day, a schoolboy received a sealed book from his teacher. The book taught him how to conquer this vicious creature. When the dragon saw this book, it fell down to the river. For fear that the dragon might play a trick of opossum, the schoolboy, holding the book, stood by the riverside and changed into a hill (Shutong Hill) to protect the local people.

To the south of this hill lies majestic Chanticleer Hill, which looks like a rooster heralding the break of day. This hill and Shutong Hill compose a picture meaning "study in the dawn". Tianjia Bay, studded with hamlets and bamboo, lies to the west of Shutong Hill. Zhuobi Peak, like an upside-down brush sits on the eastside of Shutong Hill. These peaks are mirrored in the still water of the Li River, like a colorful landscape painting. Along these mountains and Li River are old buildings and bridges.

Big Banyan Tree

This ancient tree, located 7.5km south of Yangshuo, is one of the main scenic attractions of Yangshuo town. It is said that the Banyan was planted in the Jin Dynasty and is now famous for its age and towering beauty.

On the southern bank of Jinbao River in Gaotian Village, 7.5 kilometers (4.7 miles) south of Yangshuo Town, stands a tall Banyan with a huge and exuberant umbrella-like crown. It is 17 meters (56 feet) high and its trunk is over seven meters (23 feet) in circumference. The dense crown shades an area of over 100 square meters (over 1000 square feet). The tree is said to be an ancient Banyan planted over 1500 years ago in China's Jin Dynasty. With a limpid stream flowing at the foot of it, the Great Banyan, with its reflection on the calm water, is very beautiful.

When we look closely, we see that it has beautifully twisted roots and gnarled branches, with a primitive simplicity. Its crown is round with an exuberant growth of branches and leaves. There is a huge branch stretching out straight beginning at 1 meter above the ground. Enduring wind and rain for thousands of years, it is surprising that this branch has not been harmed. The Tall Banyan is on the west bank of the Jinbao River. There is an ancient ferry crossing under the tree, called "Rongyin Gudu". Across the river, there are rocks of varying sizes, fascinating mountains and wonderful caves, setting each other off and forming a pleasing contrast. Surrounded by fascinating peaks, green bamboo, footpaths crisscrossing fabric-like between the fields, along with the local conditions and customs of a mountain village in the South, it is a virtual paradise for exploring.
True, the reason the old Banyan is well known is that the view nearby is beautiful. However, there is one more important reason. It is in this place that part of the movie Liusanjie is filmed. The shot in which Sister Liu threw a ball made of rolled colored silk to Brother Aniu as a sign of love was taken here. That's why lovers and tourists, filled with admiration, will take pictures of each other in front of this old tree.

Yulong river

A major tributary of Li River, Yulong River flows through some of the most beautiful Karst (limestone) scenery near Yangshuo. Local people use rafts as daily transportation up and down the river between house, markets, and rice paddies. Some villagers made bigger rafts and started to woo the travelers and soon it became a highlight of tourism around Yangshuo. Sitting on the reclining chair on the raft, you can enjoy an all around view of the natural, rural life down the river.

Swimming is also a popular activity on this river. There are several swimming holes on the river. Swimming here is safer than on the Li River as there is a smaller current and it is not as deep.

Several bike rides and hikes also follow the Yulong River, taking in local villages and rice paddies. These can be some of the most memorable days of your China experience.

Yulong River is the biggest branch of the Li River in Yangshuo county, The clear water runs smoothly past fields, farmhouses, trees and mountains. Traveling by bamboo raft you will be surrounded by the crystal water and feel relaxed and happy in the arms of the green mountains. Looking from the mountaintops, you can see a vivid panorama of the landscape with the green crystal water flowing through the colorful valley below. Viewers are entranced with the harmonious picture of women washing clothes beside the river, ducks swimming on the river, bamboo rafts moving under the old bridge, and farmers working in the fields. Yulong has a different kind of beauty than the Li River.

West Street

Located in northeastern part of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, Yangshuo lies 63 kilometers south of the region's capital city, Guilin, and is one of the earliest tourist attractions appraised as a "Scenic Spot on the National Level." As a city with a history of more than 1,400 years, Yangshuo annually attracts 1.5 million tourists from home and abroad. West Street, located in the very center of the city, is 2,000 meters long, and eight meters wide. The road is covered with marble, and boasts various buildings with strong ethnic flavor on both sides. The street is a gathering place for various souvenir and snack shops. The exotic nightscape also adds extra glamour.

"Guilin has the best scenery in the world, and the landscape in Yangshuo only tops Guilin," goes an old local saying.

West Street, also called 'Foreigners' Street' is a small town street dating back over 1,400 years. Arrays of unique, country residential buildings house all sorts of western bars, cafes and restaurants, Chinese art shops and clothes stalls. Tourists will find a mixed world of authentic Italian coffee, English signboards, and traditional Chinese painting and porcelain works. Do not be shocked when you see an elderly Chinese woman speaking fluent English with a couple of visitors. In the Chinese people's eyes, this simple country street is a 'pretty bourgeoisie' thing, and spending an afternoon of leisure time in a western cafe or bar is very fashionable. Travelers also like to take a break from their exciting and busy travel schedules and enjoy either a cup of the authentic Italian coffee or Chinese tea. Susannah's, Under the Moon, and MeiYou Cafe are very popular choices among tourists for both their comfortable environments and good service.

Many tourists usually come to the street after their trips in Guilin and to the Lijiang River, and many are say they are overwhelmed by the area's beauty, and then decide to stay. It is reported that the rate of inter-country marriages in Yangshuo is the highest in the nation. Many of the buildings along the street also follow western styles. Most of the houses are three- or four-stories tall, with bell towers and castle-like tops.

Moon Hill

Moon Hill, located eight kilometers (five miles) south of the town of Yangshuo, is another well-known attraction in Yangshuo. There is a hole in its peak through which the sky can be seen like a full moon, hence the name. A flight of more than 800 steps winds its way up to the top of the hill. This is called 'Appreciating Moon Path' since a traveler walking along the winding path can see the sky through the hole from different angles, appearing as a full, half or crescent moon depending on the angle. The surrounding rural scenery is also very charming.

The Moon Hill, 8 kilometres from Yangshuo, is also known as the Bright Moon Peak, as there is a 50-metre wide tunnel on the top of the hill that looks like a bright moon when the night falls. Walking on the Admiring the Moon Path, you can see the moon appearing like a crescent, or full moon, according to where you stand. After climbing about 800 marble steps, you will arrive at the Moon Cave in which there hang stalactites of various shapes, Some are like Buddhas warrior attendants, some are like jade rabbits; and some are like the goddess of the moon, creating the scene of the moon palace in Chinese legends. When you look around, you get the whole view of the surrounding area, the mountains, rivers, fields, and peasant houses, all of which make it quite a panoramic picture.
