The Oriental Pearl Tower is located at the tip of Lujiazui in the Pudong district, by the side of Huangpu River, opposite the Bund of Shanghai. The design of the building is based on a Tang Dynasty poem about the haunting sound made by a lute.
The Oriental Pearl Tower belongs to the World Federation of Great Towers. It ranks the tallest in Asia and the third tallest in the world. It consists of three big columns that are 9 meters in diameter, the space module, the upper sphere, the lower sphere, five small spheres, tower base and square. There are 6 elevators in the tower-five installed in the three columns, one between the height of 250 meters and 341 meters. In the tower, there is a double-decked elevator that can run at a speed of 7 meters per second. The tower is equipped with three-dimensional lighting installation, which makes the whole tower very colorful and beautiful.
Looking up from the base of the tower, visitors can distinctly see 11 large and small shining balls, falling down in clusters from the top down to the green lawn. The upper and lower spheres and the spaceship simulate pearls. The tower is 120.000 tons in weight, compared with the 7.000 tons of the Eiffel Tower in Paris of France. The steel structure of the lower sphere weights 624 tons, the higher sphere being 837 tons, the space cabin 50 tons and the antenna 450 tons.
At night, lit up by laser floodlights, the Oriental Pearl TV Tower is resplendent and dazzling to the eye.
