Dr. Sun Yatsen's Mausoleum is the most famous site located on Purple Mountain. Dr. Sun is arguably China's most famous revolutionary hero. Images of the first president of China and the founder of the Kuomintang party are everywhere in Nanjing.
The majestic mausoleum's construction was started in 1926 and completed in 1929. The whole Mausoleum Scenic Area represents an alarm bell as seen from the air, symbolizing the noble spirit and heroic efforts of Dr. Sun Yat-sen's devotion to the Chinese people, the fight of oppression, and wining the independence of China. Facing south, the structure, along with the mountain, ascends gradually along with the central axis line, running from south to the north, and is regarded as the most outstanding mausoleum in Chinese modern architectural history.
Chinese tourists flock to this spectacular sight in the hundreds, making their way up the fabulous marble staircase to pay their respects to the founder of modern China. The tomb itself is striking. The blue and white tiles in the Mausoleum symbolize the Kuomintang flag and the walls are decorated with the full text of "The Guidelines for Establishing a Nation" written by Dr. Sun. A sleeping statue of the revolutionary hero covers the tomb. There is also a huge tablet inscribed with Dr. Sun's "Three Principles of the Peopleā: Nationalism, Democracy and People's Livelihood.
